Consumer Rights Day: Know Your Power, Claim Your Voice!
Every 24 December, India celebrates Consumer Rights Day. This act was passed in 1986. It is popularly known as COPRA.
On December 24, 1986, the Consumer Protection Bill was passed by the Parliament on the initiative of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After being signed by the President, the Consumer Protection Act came into force across the country. It empowered consumers with a framework of safeguards and rights.
Our Consumer Rights:
- Right to Information: We have the right to complete information about the products or services we choose, including quality, quantity, price, warranty, and safety.
- Right to Choose: We have the freedom to select from a variety of products and services based on our preferences. No one can force us to purchase any specific item or service.
- Right to Safety: We are entitled to safe products and services. Manufacturers and service providers must adhere to safety standards.
- Right to be Heard: If we feel our rights have been violated, we have the right to lodge a complaint and seek a fair hearing.
- Right to Redress: Should a product or service defect cause us harm, we are entitled to compensation.
Exercising Your Rights:
- Gather Information: Research products and services online and offline. Read reviews and compare options.
- Keep Bills and Receipts: These documents act as vital proof of your rights.
- Lodge Complaints: If you experience a rights violation, file a complaint with consumer forums or courts.
- Stay Informed, Spread Awareness: Educate others in your circle about consumer rights.
Remember:As consumers, we are important market forces. By being aware of our rights and exercising them, we not only protect ourselves but also demand better products and services.
