International Anti Corruption Day: Corruption is a global phenomenon that undermines democracy, hinders economic development, and erodes public trust in institutions. Every year on December 9th, we celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness about the devastating impact of corruption and encourage collective action to combat it.
The theme for International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 is “United Against Corruption, for Development, Peace & Security.” This theme highlights the interconnected nature of corruption and its detrimental effects on various aspects of society. By working together, we can create a world free from corruption where everyone can thrive.
The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) is the leading international instrument in the fight against corruption. This comprehensive treaty provides a framework for states to prevent and address corruption through various measures, including criminalization, law enforcement, international cooperation, and asset recovery.
While significant progress has been made in recent years, the fight against corruption is far from over. According to Transparency International, one in four people still pay bribes to access basic public services. Corruption also fuels organized crime, terrorism, and other forms of illicit activity.
On International Anti-Corruption Day, let us pledge to:
- Hold our leaders accountable: Demand transparency and integrity from those in positions of power.
- Speak out against corruption: Report any instances of corruption we encounter.
- Support anti-corruption initiatives: Donate to organizations working to combat corruption and raise awareness about this critical issue.
Together, we can build a world where corruption is not tolerated and where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
