Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India, was born on 23 December 1916, in a Jat farmer family in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He dedicated his life to the upliftment of farmers and rural communities, earning him the moniker “Kisan neta” (Farmers’ leader).
Singh’s political journey began in the 1950s when he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Chief Minister of the state in 1967. As Chief Minister, he implemented several pro-farmer policies, including land reforms and irrigation projects. These policies earned him immense popularity among the rural masses.
In 1977, Singh joined the Janata Party, a coalition of several opposition parties, and played a key role in defeating the incumbent Indira Gandhi government. He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs in the Janata government. However, the Janata government was plagued by infighting and political instability, and it collapsed within two years.
In 1980, Singh returned to Uttar Pradesh as Chief Minister. He served another term in office until 1987, during which he continued to focus on pro-farmer policies. In 1989, he led the Janata Dal to victory in the Lok Sabha elections and became Prime Minister of India.
Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by several challenges, including the Mandal Commission controversy and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. However, he remained committed to his pro-farmer policies and introduced several programs to improve the lives of rural communities. He also played a key role in strengthening India’s relations with its neighbors.
Singh stepped down as Prime Minister in 1991 but remained active in politics until his death in 1987. He is remembered as a champion of the poor and downtrodden, and his legacy continues to inspire millions of farmers across India.
