Arun Khetarpal Punyatithi: Today, December 16, 2023, marks the 43rd death anniversary of Arun Khetarpal, a braveheart Indian Army officer who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration.
Khetarpal was born in a small village in Haryana in 1958. He joined the Indian Army in 1977 and was commissioned into the 17th Cavalry Regiment. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1986.
On December 16, 1987, Khetarpal was leading his tank squadron in the Battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pakistani War. The Pakistani Army launched a massive attack on the Indian positions, and Khetarpal’s squadron was tasked with defending a key bridge.
Khetarpal’s tank was hit by enemy fire, and he was seriously injured. He refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his squadron from the front. He single-handedly destroyed several Pakistani tanks and prevented the enemy from crossing the bridge.
Khetarpal was eventually killed in action, but his bravery and sacrifice helped to save the Indian positions at Longewala. He is remembered as a true hero who gave his life for his country.
Khetarpal’s story is an inspiration to all Indians. He is a reminder that courage and sacrifice are essential qualities for any soldier. He is a true patriot who will be remembered for his bravery and his love for his country.
