Smt Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the youngest sister of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was a distinguished diplomat, politician, and social reformer. She was born on August 18, 1900, in Allahabad, India. She was educated at home by her mother, Swarup Rani Nehru, and later at Queen Mary’s College in Lucknow.
Pandit joined the Indian National Congress in 1920 and was active in the independence movement. She was imprisoned several times for her political activities. In 1936, she was elected to the United Provinces Legislative Council.
After India’s independence in 1947, Pandit served as the country’s first ambassador to the Soviet Union (1947-1949). She was then appointed ambassador to the United States (1949-1951). In 1953, she became the first woman president of the United Nations General Assembly.
Pandit continued to serve in the Indian government in various capacities, including as Minister for External Affairs (1954-1964) and Governor of Maharashtra (1962-1964). She was also a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, from 1964 until her death in 1990.
