Ajmer is the heart of Rajasthan. This city is located in Aravalli Mountain valleys. Original name of Ajmer city was “Ajayameru” which means Indestructible hills.
This city was founded by Raja Ajapal Chauhan in the 7th Century AD. It is famous for pilgrimage center of Sharif Dargah.
This is a beautiful city and a wonderful place to visit. This is a religious place for all religions. Ajmer is a historical place and many tourist destinations are the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Adhai Din Ka Jhonoda, Anasagar Lake, Soniji Ki Nasiyan, Mayo College, Museum etc.
Ajmer is mainly famous for Dargah Sharif which is the house tomb of Moinuddin Chisti, the founder of the Chisti founder of Sufism. It is well-known for its history, cultural, and for its beauty.
- The Ajmer Sharif Dargah (Gharib Nawaz- benefactor of the poor) is a holy place of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti which is located at the bottom of the Taragarh Hills. It was build in the 13th century, Dargah has three gates where the main gate was donated by Nizam of Hyderabad, and Akbari Mosque built by Shah Jahan. Mughal emperor Akbar and his queen used to visit Dargah by walk.
Now around thousands of devotee visits the Dargah every day. From all over the world people come here for worship and offer chadar, flowers, Ittar etc. Many Bollywood celebrities and Politician’s visit here for blessings. One must visit this shrine if someone is on a Rajasthan trip.
- Taragarh fort or “Star Fort” is most outstanding construction in Ajmer city. It was constructed in 1354 upon a steep hillside. It was built by Mughal emperor Akbar. There are three gateways of the forts Lakshmi pol, Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi Ki Phatak. Rani Mahal is a small palace inside the fort for the queens and concubines of rulers. The fort also has Miran Saheb Ki Dargah. For the tourist, this is the amazing place to visit. Beautiful art and architecture are eye-catching.
- Adhai Din Ka Jhopda (The Hut of Two and a Half days) is a mosque by Qutubuddin Aibak built in 1193, is located on the lower slope of Taragarh hill. It brings together Indo-Islamic architecture and it further beautified by Iltutmish in 1213 AD. Adhai Din Ka Jhopda have an interesting tale behind it. It is said that this structure was completed within two and a half day. Its gate was beautifully designed and is an amazing example of art and architecture of that time. The main hall of the mosque is supported by 40 columns and every column has designed in a different way, not more than two columns are of the same decor. This place must be visited by tourist as it is an amazing example of heritage and wonderful structural design.
- Anasagar Lake is a historical artificial lake built by Maharaja Anaji. The lake is encircled by Daulat Bagh, a garden designed by Emperor Jahangir and further Emperor Shah Jahan added pavilions to it. It is one of the most famous Lakes in India and it is also the largest Lake in India.
Khobra Behroon temple is also situated near Lake. Daulat Bagh and Khobra Behroon both are the main attractive place for tourist.
Best time to visit this place is between October and March as the Lake was full and can enjoy scooter ride and boating here.
Akbari Fort and Museum is another tourist place. This was a residence of Prince Salim son of Akbar and now it is a museum of Mughal and Rajput sculpture and an example of an architecture of Mughals.
Mayo College was founded by Lord Mayo, an architecture of this building is a royal Rajasthani.
The Sai Baba Temple is also an important destination for tourist as its architecture is same as Sai temple of Shirdi.
